Mountain Retreat Spain owner Denise with great advice for stress busting as lock-down continues

Like many businesses on the Costa Blanca, Mountain Retreat Spain was forced to close its doors in mid March due to the Covid-19 outbreak. Spain Life Exclusive spoke to owner and chief therapist Denise to catch up on the latest news from this fabulous spa, and also ask Denise if she had any advice to help people who may be feeling stressed as Spain nears the end of Week 6 of lock-down.


Denise’s most important message to clients whose bookings have been cancelled is that all bookings will be honoured as soon as the spa opens its doors again. Mountain Retreat Spain is already re-booking for 2021, and Denise has this reassurance for her clients:


Everyone who had to cancel their bookings due to the virus can re-book at anytime. All deposits that were taken will be honoured and carried forward to their next booking. I would like to thank everyone for accepting credit notes and vouchers. These have no expiry date, and we look forward to welcoming our guests again when Spain is safe for us all.


Denise is a great believer in positive thinking, and that’s especially important right now, when there is so much fear and uncertainty around. While nobody can control what is happening around the world, we can control our own responses to events. We can choose to be positive, and instead of wondering why bad things happen, ask this important question:


What is this trying to teach me?

It’s said so often, it’s almost a cliché, but everything does, indeed, happen for a reason. The Universe hasn’t got it in for anybody – quite the reverse. There is a unity in everything that happens, so if we can step past our fear and feelings of lack, and trust that all will be well, we will immediately feel lighter and more hopeful for the future. Remaining positive whatever happens is the key to inner peace and emotional wellbeing, and Denise has some excellent coping strategies for us to try.


Positive affirmations


First of all, a great way to be positive is to begin the day with a positive affirmation. Each day, Denise writes down this mantra:

If you are wondering what all this means, and why there are three ‘thank yous,’ it’s because an attitude of gratitude is key to positive thinking. You can’t say ‘thank you’ and be negative at the same time. And you can’t say it without smiling. Even in dark times like these, there is always something to be grateful for. Let’s face it, just waking up is a plus! Repeating something three times also makes it more powerful, and fixes it more deeply in your consciousness. ‘Ask, Believe, Receive’ is a simple yet universal representation of the Law of Attraction. If you are confident that things will improve, they will, although it may not be in ways you expect. Likewise, if you expect things to get worse, that will happen too, because a negative mindset is blind to all the blessings around us.


Why not come up with your own positive affirmations to start the day with? You’ll be surprised how much difference it can make. Write them down in a journal or notebook, and look at them whenever you are in need of a boost. When you have a good number of affirmations written down, try this:


  • Hold your journal or notebook to your heart and close your eyes.
  • Breathe in through the nose for a count of three, hold the breath for three, then breathe out for three. Do this three times, and as you exhale, see your tensions and worries leave your body. Give the exhale a dark colour, and see it get lighter with each breath.
  • Ask inwardly what you need to know today, and allow the book to fall open in your hands. The affirmations on that page will help to boost your mood, so repeat them regularly through the day.

Most of us have more time on our hands right now, and Denise recommends getting a copy of The Power, by Rhonda Byrne. Here’s why she recommends this book to all her clients, even though it’s one to pick up and dip into, rather than sit and read in one sitting:


Just flick the book open every day, and read the page it lands on. It will be something that resonates with you, I promise. If you don’t understand what it is saying to you, the book will just keep opening on the same page.


Byrne is the author of the best-selling book, The Secret, but Denise says The Power is more suitable for most people, as the message is easier to understand. It’s all about positivity, and that’s what we all need for our mental health right now.


Wash away stress as you wash your hands

Unless you’ve been in a parallel universe, you’ll know just how important hand washing is in containing the spread of Covid-19. Denise suggests combining this essential task with some sensory exercises to relieve stress.


  • Close your eyes, run the tap, and just listen to the sound of the running water for a while.
  • Now add your soap to your hands and spread it around, taking in the different textures and smells. Let your senses take over and enjoy the sensations you are feeling. Immerse yourself in the moment.
  • As you rinse your hands, listen to the sounds of the water. This is a very simple way to remove yourself from the stresses of the day and refresh your mind as you clean your hands.


You will feel refreshed and renewed after this simple exercise, so do it as often as you want to, and use a nicely scented soap that lathers up well.


Denise’s final message for now is, remind yourself that when bad things happen, it’s not a disaster, unless you allow it to be so. How we react and process what’s going on around us is crucial to how we view those events, now and later. If we remain in a positive frame of mind, we will come through this stronger and happier, because we’ll realise what’s really important to us, and what doesn’t matter in the great scheme of things.


Being positive isn’t about walking around with a fixed grin, or laughing off serious events. It’s about finding the good in every situation, however bad it may seem. Don’t say ‘I am stuck at home,’ say ‘I am safe at home.’ And rather than being sorry you can’t go to work or socialise with friends, use the extra time to learn a new creative skill, take that course you never had time for, or simply ‘be.’


Above all, stay safe and well at home until Spain is safe again. Denise will be back soon with more ideas for staying stress-free and positive. Until then, use this time for self-care, and remember to add some pampering into the mix.
