We all develop tightness in muscles and joints

The fact is that all people, from top-level athletes to very sedentary people develop tightness, scar tissue, adhesions and fuzz. This can develop in and in-between soft tissue structures such as muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Both joints and soft tissues need to move well in order to keep good mobility and flexibility. One has to understand that the soft tissues need to be healthy and flexible for the joints to move well, and the joints need to move well for the soft tissue to stay healthy.


Overuse is the root of most of the muscle problems

Static positions

A person that spends most of the day in front of a screen is likely to develop tension in various muscles because most muscles don’t like static positions. Muscles in our neck and shoulders are likely to get a form of overuse just from maintaining the same position for a long time and constantly being affected by gravity, particularly if the posture isn’t good. The result can be tension, pressure or friction causing decreased circulation which leads to fibrosis and adhesions in and in-between tissues.

Repetitive motion

The same happens with repetitive motions. Doing the same movement over and over again has potentially the same effect. It could be using the mouse on a computer, painting your house or swinging a golf club enough times. The work does not need to be hard or heavy. As long as there are many enough repetitions, the result is the same… overuse leading to scar tissue and adhesions.

Scar tissue is less elastic than normal tissue – scar tissue does not have elastin- reducing the structures ability to stretch, and whether it is a result of static work, repetitive strain, an acute strain from sports or trauma from an outside force, this scar tissue may attach to form adhesions to neighbouring structures. A traumatised muscle may get ‘stuck’ to a muscle or nerve next to it affecting the ability of these structures to move freely in relation to each other.

The solution
If this scar tissue, adhesions or ‘fuzz’ does not get broken down from doing exercises or receiving treatment, it will become tougher and tougher affecting movement patterns and our nervous system, potentially causing pain.
Varied exercises are the best way to prevent problems and it can also be part of the solution if you are already suffering.

The longer the adhesions have been present, the more likely it is you need help from a specialist therapist to restore normal function. Potentially a small amount of scar tissue can cause a lot of problems. By locating the spot exactly, the problem can often be solved quickly and permanently if the treatment technique is correct.
