If you have always had protruding ears and you feel self-conscious, Valverde & Arpino bring us today all the information about the well-known “otoplasty” an uncomplicated and minimally invasive intervention that modifies the appearance of the ears.
Otoplasty is the surgery performed to reposition prominent ears or “protruding” to a more normal position, closer to the head, or to reduce the size of large ears.
Generally, it is a surgery performed on children under 6 years of age. Because the ears are almost fully grown by the age of 4, the earlier the surgery is performed, the less of a problem it may be for the child and the less teasing it may cause.
Otoplasty can also be performed in adults, with no major risks at this age.
The procedure
Due to the complexity of the architecture of the ears, Valverde & Arpino will perform a thorough analysis of each case to assess which structure is to be sculpted and repositioned to bring the ears back and thus obtain a harmonious position of the same, with respect to the facial structure.
An otoplasty usually lasts about two hours, although in complex cases it may take longer. The technique used will depend on the specific problem.
Generally, a small incision is made in the back of the ear to expose the auricular cartilage. The cartilage is then sculpted and folded back; internal stitches may be used to maintain the new shape.
Most patients, children, and adults, are well within a few hours after surgery.
A bandage is placed around the head immediately after surgery. The ears may be a little sore for the first few days, but this is easily relieved with medication. In a few days, the bandage is changed for a lighter one similar to a headband.
It is important to follow the instructions regarding the use of the bandage, especially at night. Any activity in which the ears may bend should be avoided during the first month.
Most adults return to work 5 days after surgery; children return to school in about 7 days, as long as they are careful with physical activities.
