The Urban Beaches of Alicante

Some of Alicante’s best tourist attractions are its excellent beaches. Year after year they receive the Blue Flag award by the European Union, which earns them well deserved international recognition. Here are 3 of them.

Postiguet

Located in the heart of the city of Alicante, at the foot of the Castle of Santa Bárbara, the beach of Postiguet is famous for top quality golden sand and palm grooves. The beach is close to the Old Quarter which makes it a prime holiday destinations for the visitors. There are zones reserved for playing sports such as beach volleyball, and lots of car parking spaces nearby, both public and private.

The beautiful Explanada de España bordering the beach is one of the most popular seafront of Alicante. It features a half kilometer long marvelous marble floor, created using 6.6 million tiles in red, white and black, in a pattern that represents the waves of the Mediterranean Sea. It’s a hive of activity, by day or night, and one of the most popular routes to follow in the city. The eastern end of the beach is known as Playa del Coco. It is the place where the fireworks take place during the celebration of Bonfires of San Juan.

 

 

San Juan

San Juan beach is Alicante’s most famous beach, with sands stretching from the beaches at El Campello right through to the Cabo de las Huertas headland. It is an open beach with very high-quality fine sands located in an area with lots of apartments, services and businesses. It stretches along 2.9 km and all along the beachfront there are all kinds of restaurants and beach bars, some of which are actually on the beach itself. San Juan beach is very close to the golf course called Alicante Golf and there are many public parking spaces nearby, as well as areas reserved for various sports such as beach volleyball, football, windsurfing, etc. There are hotels of various categories in the immediate vicinity, plus an educational play area for the mentally handicapped and an area with disabled access during the summer months.

 

 

La Almadraba

Situated in a small cove just between the Postiguet and San Juan, La Almadraba is an small beach, perfect for relaxing, calm and free of waves and crowds. From this quiet place you can enjoy fantastic sunsets as well.
