Restaurante Casa Vital prepares to open its beautiful terraces on Monday 11 May

After a long two months of lock-down due to the Covid-19 outbreak, restaurants with outdoor terraces will be allowed to open for business on Monday 11 May. Age Folkestad, owner of Restaurante Casa Vital in Altea Old Town, and creator of the award-winning Azul Mediterraneo blue wine, is looking forward to welcoming returning guests and new friends to this beautiful corner of authentic Spain.

Casa Vital is so much more than a restaurant. Located high above the Mediterranean, with stunning views across to Calpe, their passion for good food extends to embracing the culture of the region as well. Altea is famous for its artists and craftspeople, due to the amazing natural lighting and beautiful scenery, and Age regularly stages exhibitions from local artists and organises wine tastings.

Age left behind the schoolrooms of Norway, where he was a teacher, in 2000, and headed to Altea, also known as ‘The Culture Capital of Valencia.’ From the start, he immersed himself in local culture, while still staying true to his roots. Casa Vital serves a varied menu of Spanish and Norweigian dishes, concentrating on fresh fish from Spain and Norway, succulent meat dishes, and a wide range of original starters and tapas.

From the beginning, Age has been passionate about the wines of Spain, and one of the bodegas he visited suggested he create his own wine.  His first rioja won a gold medal in 2015, and all the wines produced by Vinos de Casa Vital are popular at the restaurant, as well as being exported across Europe.

However, the wine which draws most comment is Azul Mediterraneo, the blue wine which made its debut in 2016. There are now four versions of the wine: Classic, made with Chardonnay and Moscatel grapes, Dry Chardonnay, Frizzante Verdejo, and Brut Nature, made with Chardonnay.

Brighton fan Russ Pearce, a writer and English teacher based in Guardamar, was very impressed with the Classic wine, after sampling it at Expo Torrevieja. For more information about  Azul, read his review on Anything But Paella.

If you are concerned about the colouring that makes the wine blue, the Mediterranean-inspired shade comes from the anthocyanins which occur naturally beneath the skins of blue grapes. Also, as these flavenoids have antioxidant properties, blue wine could even lower your blood pressure, reduce internal inflammation and have anti-aging properties!

Getting away from drinking to eating, social distancing rules must still be observed, and restaurants can only accommodate 50% of their normal diners on outside terraces. This is because there needs to be enough space between tables for diners to sit in comfort and safety.

Latest government advice is that restaurants can open their dining rooms on 25 May in addition to outdoor terraces, but again with just 50% occupation.  So for now, it’s just 24 people dining in one sitting, so it’s best to reserve your table to avoid disappointment.

Restaurante Casa Vital, with its stunning views across the Mediterranean Sea towards Calpe, is a perfect location for dining at any time. Now, when restaurants have been closed for two months, the views, the ambience and the perfect cuisine make it the ideal place for your first, celebratory meal that you haven’t had to cook yourself.
