El Port Veterinarios warns us about chronic renal insufficiency which unfortunately is one of the most frequent pathologies in our pets when they reach old age.
Recognizing it early is of vital importance in order to establish a treatment and preserve the life of our companion.
Here are some signs to recognize it in cats:
1- WEIGHT LOSS.
2- DRINKING or EATING MORE THAN USUAL.
3- LOSS OF APPETITE.
4- DEHYDRATATION and MATT COAT.
5- OVER SLEEP and DAMP EYES,
6- BAD ENCOURAGEMENT, WEAKNESS and LACK OF GROOMING.
In dogs, it would be similar. One of the most important signs, when the pathology is already established, is the “capricious appetite”; they stop eating, at first they only like some homemade food, and when it is more advanced a more serious sign is the onset of vomiting.
For prevention, it is also highly recommended to perform an annual blood test on all dogs and cats over 7 years of age (although the earlier the better); and even earlier is the Protein/Creatinine ratio in urine, which indicates whether glomerulonephritis has started with a simple urine test.
If you have any questions on this or any other topic to help keep our pets healthy, don’t hesitate to contact them.
