Balthazar Project Gallery, Moraira: Christian Caminitos Exhibition opens Friday 3 July

Balthazar Project Gallery in Moraira is one of those magical places you feel privileged to stumble across. Once you do, you will want to go back again and again. This is no ordinary gallery – it can be more accurately described as a concept store. Not sure what that is? It’s a mixture of studio and shop, where you can see and buy all sorts of things – some functional, some edible, and some just beautiful to look at and life enhancing.

Items in concept stores are not mass produced – they are created with love by artists and artisans. Often made from renewable materials, these creations are usually eco-friendly. You won’t find them lined up on shelves – they will be tastefully or eye-catchingly arranged in attractive displays, which show them to best advantage. Going into a concept store is like entering a gallery full of beautiful things that you can not only look at, but buy to take home with you, and Balthazar Project Gallery is no exception.

Balthazar stocks gourmet food items, furniture, hand-crafted toiletries and pieces of art, produced by local and international creative people, many of whom have worked in partnership with Balthazar for some time. Whatever your tastes, you are sure to find something that inspires you and connects with you. Can’t find exactly what you are looking for? Then commission a bespoke piece from one of the exhibiting artists.

On Friday 3 July, Balthazar unveils an exhibition dedicated to the work of Christian Caminitos. The Argentinian-born artist, who now lives in Spain, is well known for being able to turn anything into art. He’s inspired by the bold colours of his homeland, and the movement in Argentina’s national dance, the tango. Christian vividly remembers:

I was born in La Boca, in Buenos Aires, one of the most prominent ports in Latin America. The immense mix of cultures and beautiful vibrant colours lit a flame of inspiration in me that still lights my day, every day.

Christian vividly remembers: ‘I was born in La Boca, in Buenos Ares, one of the most prominent ports in Latin America. The immense mix of cultures and beautiful vibrant colours lit a flame of inspiration in me that still lights my day, every day.’

Christian has reproduced these swirling, bold colours and patterns on all sorts of items, from indoor and outdoor murals and paintings to shoes, chairs and pottery. His art is an eclectic mix of accents from his childhood and homeland and influences of Spain and the sun, expressed in colourful modern pieces. It’s impossible not to smile and reconnect with your own inner child when viewing his art. It’s different, it’s magical, it’s inspirational, and it’s practical.

There are many examples of Christian’s unmistakeable art around Moraira. This exhibition gives locals and visitors alike the chance to become familiar with the sheer scope of this prolific artist’s talent. The exhibition is running through the summer, so there is plenty of time to visit. Like all businesses in Spain right now, Balthazar Project Gallery is taking every precaution to keep its staff and clients safe, with stringent cleaning and hygiene protocols in place, as well as social distancing.
