5 Reasons to Live in Sotogrande

Sotogrande is considered one of the main luxury residential areas in southern Spain. If you like wellness, exclusivity and privacy, then Sotogrande is the area for you.

Sotogrande, Andalusia, Spain

Sotogrande stands out for the essence of its events, its dream villas and its large influx of tourists throughout the year where they are accompanied by a warm climate throughout their stay. For this reason, there is an increasing demand for people who decide to live in this wonderful place, what leads them to do so and what are the main reasons?

Today, Sotogrande is home to around 2,500 people year-round, but as many of the enclave’s exclusive properties are used primarily as holiday homes, the population can swell by up to five times that amount in summer.

Covering an area of 20 square kilometres, stretching inland from the Mediterranean to the foothills of the Sierra de Almenara, Sotogrande is part of the municipality of San Roque in the province of Cadiz. It’s bordered to the north by the villages of Torreguadiaro and Guadiaro, and to the south by the urbanisations of La Alcaidesa and La Reserva de Sotogrande.

Here are some of the top reasons why Sotogrande is a fantastic place to live, with your partner and/or with your family:

1. Plenty of Space

Since its inception, Sotogrande has grown globally according to a carefully laid out and conscientiously designed master plan. This has allowed for a development that emphasises villas and apartment complexes surrounded by nature, green spaces and low density. The first development is spread over 20km2, guaranteeing plenty of space to grow at a sustainable pace.

Sotogrande Alto is the largest area of urbanization, where you can find the Valderrama golf course where there is room for large golf tournaments, the Almenara golf course, and the La Cañada golf course, all of them, especially the first one, of great international prestige.

With numerous green areas and adjacent to the Natural Park of Los Alcornocales, is undoubtedly one of the areas with the highest demand for those seeking tranquillity and discretion.it abounds in luxury villas and single-family homes.

To counterbalance the mountains with the sea, Sotogrande Costa is a very good option. With wide avenues in the style of Beverly Hills, you can also play golf here, as the Real Club de Golf de Sotogrande is located here. You can choose between living in a flat overlooking the Guadiaro River, a beachfront townhouse or a luxury villa, and if you are a polo enthusiast, there are two of the six polo fields in the urbanisation.

2. Selection of Outdoor Sports

The first sport not to be missed if you live in Sotogrande is golf. Here you will find some of the best golf courses in Spain, with a variety of courses and clubs to suit all tastes. One of the highlights is La Reserva Club, which offers a contemporary country club setting with all the services and facilities you need.

At La Reserva Club you can also practice tennis and paddle tennis on its multiple courts, as well as learn the best techniques at its tennis academy. Its extensive programme for all ages and levels will adapt perfectly to your type of game.

Being so close to the sea, we cannot forget the water sports that can be practised in Sotogrande. There is an almost limited variety, with some such as rowing and kitesurfing, water skiing and scuba diving. Water sports can also be practised in our lagoon, located in La Reserva Club.

However, the stand-out sporting event here is Polo,  the king of elite sports. An absolute must-attend event during the year is the International Polo tournament at the Santa María Polo Club, where you can enjoy a great summer afternoon of leisure.

3. Its Gorgeous Climate

Forget those cold northern winters, Sotogrande enjoys around 300 days of sunshine a year. Temperatures are mild in winter and, thanks to the area’s cool breezes, it escapes the hot spells that inland Spain experiences in summer, making it the ideal climate in which to enjoy an active outdoor lifestyle to the full.

4. A Unique Gastronomy Apt for the Most Demanding of Palettes

It’s well known that in Andalusia we can enjoy one of the best cuisines in the country. In Sotogrande, according to this tradition and these top-quality ingredients, avant-garde dishes are created that will surprise you and that you can enjoy by the sea. Don’t miss the incredible and sophisticated gastronomy of the restaurants in Sotogrande.

In Sotogrande, the best places are in the Marina, where you can enjoy excellent fish and meat dishes. We leave the Port and find more restaurants of all kinds in the Sotogrande Urbanisation, all types of cuisine in the most select ambiences.

On the other hand, if you wish to take a stroll, you should know that in La Línea, San Roque or Los Barrios, you’ll find excellent fish, seafood and meat restaurants of all kinds.

In addition, the Campo de Gibraltar is a cosmopolitan place, where international cuisine has made its place just as it has in Sotogrande. Finding restaurants with expertise in Italian cuisine, pizzerias, Chinese, Mexican or Argentinian cuisine will not be a problem for you. See our guide to restaurants in Campo de Gibraltar and our guide to restaurants in Sotogrande.

5. The Exceptional Facilities

Sotogrande, with its low population density and only 30 minutes from Marbella, is an ideal place to live as a family, thanks to the services available here.

There is, for example, the prestigious Sotogrande International School, one of Spain’s leading schools, which caters for children aged between 3 and 18 and follows the International Baccalaureate curriculum in English.
