A Few Words on Fashion Designer Barbara Bui
Born in Paris, western by her mother and Asian by her father, Barbara Bui says that her mixed heritage is very much a part of her identity, her work and her brand DNA, encouraging her to be open and curious about many different cultures. Her fashion is above all a style that expresses the duality, a silhouette that mixes the masculine and feminine codes. Barbara Bui was one of the first young designers to open under her own name at a time when that was still rare: she showed a collection during Paris fashion week for the first time in 1987, winning critical acclaim from international buyers and the press.
Barbara Bui focuses on her “rock chic” identity. She highlights her collections with black in every shade and nuance, in shiny or matte finishes, in leather or lace. The signature pieces of Barbara Bui collections are the leather pants, the balzer jacket, the vest, statement shoes including brilliantly embroidered boots and the print of snake, used as fetish stamping. The snake symbol in embroidery and jewellery represent temptation and desire, sensuality and the forbidden apple. Overall the Barbara Bui woman is feminine/boyish, sexy and edgy, soft and romantic:
“I design for a modern woman who takes charge of her feminity and all the aspects of her life – whether she’s a working woman, a mother, a lover, a wife. What she finds in my collections is a strong style for a woman of character, a free spirit.”
Barbara Bui currently lives in Paris and her home, in the fashionable district of Le Marais, is just a short walk from her offices and atelier. She dresses international celebrities such as Charlize Theron, Gwyneth Paltrow, Heidi Klum, Rita Ora, Kate Hudson or Rihanna.
